Genus Overview

Mayflies are freshwater aquatic insects that spend most of their lives in or around lakes or streams. Most mayfly nymphs have three long thin tails (caudal filaments). Mayflies are usually "ecological indicators" of good water quality and are an important source of food for fish and other aquatic wildlife. Anglers often use mayflies as bait, or tie "flies".
